A Wider Rear Opening Supported by a Steel Beam

The former patio door and adjacent window were combined into a substantially wider rear opening. A steel beam carries the span, allowing a new patio slider and broad window arrangement to reshape the back of the home.

Two Smaller Openings Became One Wider Composition.

The original rear wall separated the patio door from a nearby window. Removing the intervening wall section created room for a broader glazed area, but it also changed how the load above the opening had to be supported.

A steel I-beam was lifted into position and secured across the new span. Once the structure was established, the new patio slider, wide window and additional rear windows could be installed within a coordinated elevation.

The result gives the main living area a stronger connection to the yard and substantially more glass across the rear wall. Compare sliding patio doors and combination window layouts for related configurations.

Send exterior and interior photographs that show the complete wall, not only the existing door. Enlarging an opening affects structure, exterior masonry and the way the new products fit together.
